Scanned postcard from the Williams College Library to L. G. Treadway re. the phrase commonly used to describe Williamstow, "The Village Beautiful." The postcard notes that the term probably originated with Daniel Pidgeon, an English economist and engineer who visited town around 1884. Pidgeon noted that the town's "romantic situation, park-enfolded homes, and peaceful atmosphere place Williamstown easily ahead of every other New England village for beauty." Refer to the WIlliams College Alumni Review dated April, 1914, pg. 4 and Williamstown the Village Beautiful by N. R. Green, 1924 for more information. Original postcard with donor. |
