a brass & copper thermometer. There is a head piece which is rounded & has curled decoration, the themometer sits inside about .25" of a rectangular frame, it reads from 0 to 140, at the other end is a screw type device. Conditions and Alterations: Excellent, some tarnish Donor/Vendor/Information: Mercury themometer from first Williamstown gas plant. Williamstown Gas Co. chartered 1889. Charles A ROebuck claimed to be the first operator after he installed the plant. Roebuck was employed by what is now Northern Berkshire Gas Co. Until retired by Directors about 1928-29. After leaving the Williamstown Co. he resided in Troy, NY wit his daughter. Prior to leaving Williamstown, he presented the themometer to JBR stating that there has been 2 gas generators installed, the first one was suspended because of economy in the amount of oil used and this thermometer was off the first machine. Williamstown Directory for 1899 shows that Charles A Roebuck was listed as Supt. of Williamstown Gas Co & that he resided on Hoxey St. Williamstown. Marks: next to the temp page is stamped "Huddleston, Boston" |
